Overview Discovery Point is one of Dundee’s most important and visually striking visitor attractions, located on the city’s redeveloped waterfront beside the V&A Dundee. At its heart sits the RRS Discovery, a historic wooden steamship built in Dundee and forever linked to Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic expedition of 1901–1904. Today, Discovery Point is an award-winning visitor centre and museum that brings the story of exploration, endurance, and innovation to life. Through immersive galleries, interactive exhibits, film, and artefacts, visitors can explore the ship’s construction, its Antarctic journey, and its later life. Alongside the museum experience, visitors can step aboard the RRS Discovery itself, walking the decks and exploring the interior spaces where history unfolded. The RRS Discovery. A Ship Built for History Launched in 1901 in Dundee, the RRS Discovery was purpose-built for polar exploration. Designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the Antarctic, the ship became the centrepiece of one of the most famous expeditions in British history. Under the command of Captain Scott, Discovery carried scientists and crew into some of the harshest environments on Earth, contributing significantly to early polar research. Today, the ship is permanently docked in Dundee, fully restored and preserved as part of the Discovery Point attraction. It remains one of the most important historic vessels in the UK and is recognised nationally for its significance. Visitors can walk through: The deck and rigging areas Crew quarters and officer cabins Scientific workspaces Engine and lower deck areas The experience offers a rare, up-close insight into life aboard an early 20th-century expedition vessel. Discovery Point. Museum & Visitor Centre Discovery Point is more than just a ship it is a fully accredited museum and immersive visitor experience designed for all ages. Inside, visitors will find: Interactive galleries telling the story of Antarctic exploration Film and video installations bringing the expedition to life Original artefacts, documents, and equipment Hands-on exhibits designed for families and younger visitors Exhibitions exploring Dundee’s shipbuilding heritage The attraction is recognised as a 5-star VisitScotland Visitor Attraction and holds collections of national significance, making it one of the leading museums in Scotland. Discovery Mast Climb. Dundee’s New Adventure Experience One of the newest and most exciting additions to the site is the Discovery Mast Climb — an adrenaline-fuelled experience that allows visitors to climb the rigging of the RRS Discovery itself.
