5 Top Hidden Gems uncovered by Visitors

Have you discovered these 5 hidden gems tucked away in and around the Dundee area?

Dundee is a literal treasure trove of hidden gems. Over the past few months, we have welcomed an army of travel, foodie and family bloggers and influencers to explore the city and wider area. What they found is that Dundee is a literal treasure trove of hidden gems for visitors to experience.

Here, we have plucked a handful of precious must-visit gems that the influencers discovered and loved during their exploration of the area.

  1. Dundee’s Secret Bar

Well, it doesn’t get much more hidden than this! In true prohibition era style, Dundee has a ‘Speakeasy’. In a secret location, Draffens offers mouth-watering cocktails and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. But where is it? Foodie influencer sisters Steph and Nat AKA @Millennial_menu_ literally stumbled across the bar while taking a walk through the city. “We loved wandering and finding so many hidden gems,” said Steph. “Draffens was a completely unexpected find.” Our advice if you want to find Draffens? Ask the locals and remember, it’s a secret!

  1. Tayside Police Museum

A visit to the Tayside Police Museum made one of our influencers, Graeme Johncock @Scotlands_stories late for dinner there was so much to see! Located in the old police station in Kirriemuir, this place is teeming with stories and still has its working cells. As much as we don’t want to have a run in with the law, this museum is an absolute must if you’ve ventured into Angus. Run by volunteers, the best way to support the Tayside Police Museum is to go and see if for yourself. Just behave yourself – it’s a former police station after all.

  1. Sweetpea Café

No matter where you are in Tayside, the area is blessed with some fantastic independent cafes. The Sweetpea Café in Broughty Ferry is a fine example. Jasmine McInnes @winging_mamahood found her “new coffee hotspot” here where she fell in love with the homemade sweet and savoury bakes and “adorable crockery.” Priding themselves on offering great coffee and a warm welcome, the Sweetpea Café is popular with locals as well as visitors. What better endorsement is there than impressing the locals?

  1. Dundee Open-Top Bus Tours

Now this option is hot off the press so we can’t really claim it’s a hidden gem yet. Also, none of our influencers have had the chance to hop on yet, but Xplore Dundee have launched Discover Dundee: your official guide to the City of Discovery. We couldn’t let the introduction of Dundee’s first open bus tour go without a mention. Running through the summer, travel around the toon and see the sights without having to move. Our advice, pick a non-blustery day, a wee coffee and fine piece from Wrecking Ball Doughnuts or Heather Street Food nearby before jumping onboard at Discovery Point. Then, sit back, relax and soak up the culture.

  1. We Love Platters

If you’re coming to Dundee for a gathering or maybe staying in self-catering accommodation just like Greenstar Apartments, then a delectable grazing board from We Love Platters will go down a treat. Guest blogger @montessoriplaying was delivered a charcuterie board, chocolate strawberries and cocktails during her visit and said she was in “charcuterie heaven” and couldn’t believe she’d never had one of these before. We don’t know about you, but we’re feeling peckish!
